Anand Agarawala BumpTop desktop is a beautiful mess

Anand Agarawala presents BumpTop, possibly the next evolutionary jump for the user interface, instead of a mundane 2D desktop we may have a more visceral 3D desktop.
With a pinch of Newtonian physics, icons can be easily resized and the options of file organization becomes more practical, in a sense more ‘real’… I like it.

This is so funny, but what is not so funny is that it is so close to the truth that it’s not so funny after all. I think I just said funny too many times. Oh well, getalookat the video and see if you think it’s funny too.
David Pogue When it comes to tech, simplicity sells

A phrase we’ve all heard is ‘Tech support’, but it’s support for techs, not the average Joe or Joeann… if your not tech savvy they seem to be speaking in tongs, you sort of recognize most words, but it’s like they pulled them out of a hat or something, and then, just to make sure you’ve got no chance of understanding… they send you to India or the Philippines, forcing you to speak to someone who’s accent is sooo bad, you got no chance of understanding their basic English, yet alone their technobabel.
Now considering you were probably suffering from ’software rage’, before you resorted to the last resort, they then put on hold… don’t you just hate that. What ever happened to KISS? Why do they get geeks to explain geeky things in technobabel? What ever happened to plain English? What ever happened to Service? You bought their software, surely decent service is not too much to expect? But no, if you ring Microsoft, the first thing they ask for is your credit card number, a sort of wham bam thank you mam, no foreplay no pillow talk just give us ya money, and this from one of the supposed riches companies… and who else but Microsoft would call their off button ‘Start’?

Embarrassing internal Microsoft Vista video
May 3, 2008
Video: YouTube
This attempt to use Bruce Springsteen’s name to enhance the popularity of Windows Vista is so embarrassing. Microsoft should stick to making their software and doing a better job of it, maybe they will start doing this right for all of their customers.
Transparent Screens

Transparent Screens like these have been around for a while now, Beam suggested the idea to me a few years back, I must get around to taking a photo of my desk so that I can try this on my laptop. Anyhow until I get around to it I just thought I’d post these here for anybody who hasn’t seen them before. For those of you that don’t know, the idea is to take a photo behind the screen and then adjust the size to suit so that it can fit as your desktop wallpaper and give the effect that your screen looks like it is see through.

Scientists build first Memristor: Missing fourth electronic circuit element
May 1, 2008

In an exciting breakthrough, scientists from HP Labs have built working prototypes of a new electronic circuit component called a ‘Memristor’. The device may lead to instant-on PC’s and analog computers that act in the same way a human brain does.
Until recently the Memristor had only been described using mathematical equations written back in 1971 by engineering student Leon Chua. Although Chua knew this circuit element should exist, he was unable to come up with a physical manifestation of the component.
“Thirty-seven years later, a group of scientists from HP Labs has finally built real working memristors, thus adding a fourth basic circuit element to electrical circuit theory, one that will join the three better-known ones: the capacitor, resistor and the inductor.”
The researchers believe this discovery may be integral in the production of Instant-on PC’s and more energy efficient computers and even computers that act in the same way as the human brain.
