Las Vegas to Build World’s First 30 Story Vertical Farm

January 27, 2008

Since our earlier post about Vertical Farms we’ve heard that now Las Vegas has anounced that it hopes to have the world’s first 30 Story Vertical Farm.

Las Vegas the tourist mecca of the World is set to begin development of the World’s first vertical farm. The $200 million dollar project is designed to be a functional and profitable working farm growing enough food to feed 72,000 people for a year and provide another tourist attraction to the city that does everything in a larger than life way.

“The World currently uses about 80% of the available farm land and 60% of the earth’s population lives near or in an urban environment so the logical choice for farming is to go up for land where the environment can be controlled and where distribution is local. Las Vegas is seen as the perfect location for this project by Nevada State officials who would like to demonstrate their sustainability and environmental awareness instead of projecting an image of waste and excess.

Although the project initial cost is high at $200 million, with annual revenue of $25 million from produce and another $15 million from tourists the 30 story vertical farm would be about as profitable as a casino with operating expenses only being about $6 million a year.

There would be about 100 different crops grown ranging from strawberries to lettuce even miniature banana trees could be grown from each floors specially controlled environment. The products would go straight to the casinos and hotel properties and be a very visible and desirable addition to the overall Las Vegas experience. Design details should be worked out in 2008 and the project could open its doors by the middle of 2010.”

Viewers to Google.com.au may have recently noticed that the Google logo had a distinctly Aussie feel on Australia Day.

Google recently asked school students across Australia to design their own version of the Google logo, based around the theme of ‘My Australia’.

The students were split into 4 different age groups and there were winners from each age group.

The overall winner was Janelle San Juan, who designed the logo shown above. Janelle will have her logo displayed during Australia Day.

See more about the campaign in the video below, as well as the category winners by clicking read more below.

Please leave any parcel under the mat and remove this note

“I was expecting a delivery from Amazon Yesterday, I thought the parcel was going to be small. I noticed they tend to just leave the parcels on the door step and I knew I was going to be at the office all day. So I put a note on the door saying:

Please leave any parcel under the matt and remove this note.

When I came home, the note was gone and the delivery man did indeed leave the parcel under the matt… look at the size of the parcel… I am sure he must have laughed a lot when he left!”

I hope the delivery person had a warped sense of humor.

NASA’s Mega Flyby of Mercury’s Dark Side

It’s been a while since the mid 70’s Mariner 10 mission was sent sunward to Mercury. The current Messenger craft will eventually take thousands of photos including photos this time of the ‘Dark side’. It will measure the planet’s magnetic field, report on Mercury’s composition and who knows what else we will find out… it’s the old I don’t know what I don’t know and as far as I’m concerned it’s all good, knowledge is good, the quest for knowledge is good, who knows what benefits may come from the the Messenger Mission to Mercury.

Here’s a certainty, we will become a space faring race… barring our planet being wiped out by another asteroid like the one that took out the dinosaurs, or us killing ourselves in any one of a number of other ways such as dramatic global climate change caused by human stupidity and over population, or some genetically induced calamity caused by some group of morons playing god for money and missing the bleeding obvious; later referred to as hindsight, or it could be because of that other bright idea we have to have enough nuclear weapons to wipe out the planet, who knows how many times those morons have got it up to now, or what other insane Dr Strangelove schemes they are cooking up.
