Misheard lyrics: Kyrie, Mr Mister
December 25, 2007
Kyrie was a song written and released by Mr Mister in 1985. The song went to number 1 on the US and Canadian charts and number 11 on the UK charts. I have always liked the song and would often sing along to it if it came on the radio or TV.
I have to be honest though and say that I had my own mixed up version of what I thought the words for this song were.
The chorus for the song contains the lyrics, Kyrie Eleison, Down the road that I must travel. Kyrie Eleison, Through the darkness of the night. Kyrie Eleison, Where I’m going will you follow. Kyrie Eleison, On a highway in the light.
Kyrie Eleison, by the way is Greek for “Lord have mercy”.
The most common interpretation people make is, “Carry a laser” down this road that I must travel. My version was “Kyrie an angel”, down this road that I must travel.
Mr Mister also saw success with Broken Wings in 1985 which went to number 1 in the US and Canada and number 4 in the UK.

Kyrie - Mr. Mister
The wind blows hard against this mountainside
Across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide
Setting my feet upon the road
My heart is old it holds my memories
My baby burns a gemlike flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine
Is where I find myself again
Kyrie Eleison
Down the road that I must travel
Kyrie Eleison
Through the darkness of the night
Kyrie Eleison
Where I’m going will you follow
Kyrie Eleison
On a highway in the light
When I was young I thought of growing old
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road
Or only wished what I could be
