    The airport is on the island of Madeira. This island is owned by Portugal and lies off the coast of Portugal and Africa.

    Beautiful engineering and good use of limited island real estate. But airplanes sometimes run off the strip, either to the side or the ends. Usually this only results in grass stains on the tires. Here, it would be a whole different matter. What were they thinking!
